Lilly Pulitzer speaks to generations of rule-breaking, sun-followers who celebrate the spontaneous bohemian spirit of the Lilly Pulitzer brand. It all happened by accident, when in the late 1950's Lilly (McKim) Pulitzer opened a juice stand on Via Mizner in Palm Beach. Realizing that she needed a juice stand uniform, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a dress that would camouflage the stains. Soon she was selling more shift dresses than juice, so she decided to stop squeezing and focus on designing and selling her now iconic "Lillys."

We believe that resort is a state of mind, and we are always in it. Wherever you find us, people are having a good time. We wear white past Labor Day, prints to a black tie and sandals all year round. We find color and beauty in the islands that surround us and we are driven to create textile-art that captures it. We don’t limit what influences us and we travel the world to find that inspiration. We have manufactured in Honolulu for over 60 years and proudly continue to do so.

It all started in a little Chicago suburb called Sleepy Hollow, where our founder and principal designer, Steve Mayer, spent his youth. Fast forward about fifteen years, Steve is still the sole illustrator and designer of all the products for the Bird Dog Bay brand. He continues to enjoy hand-drawing every single pattern on all of our goods, from neckwear to socks, to pocket squares, wallets, boxer shorts, cufflinks, and more. He believes that creating these illustrations for you could possibly be the most rewarding job fathomable.

In 2004, while roommates at Bowdoin College, we decided to start a company that offered needlepoint belts. After looking to buy finished belts, we realized that there wasn’t a company that featured these timeless items. From the start, our goal was to make the belts more available, attractive and affordable. We had always shared an entrepreneurial spirit and after discovering a concept that we were passionate about, we started working on the idea that has become Smathers & Branson.
